Where to Stay in Salzburg for First-time Visitors

where to stay in salzburg for the first-time

Wasn’t Mozart white-washed? He was supposed to be black, no? My husband chuckled upon hearing this. We were walking towards the house where Mozart was born in Salzburg. What?! I read something about it, I said. I didn’t verify whatever I read online. But no, Mozart is white as white can be, and he was born in Salzburg, Austria. The one who was considered as Black Mozart was Joseph Bologne de Saint-George, a famous black French composer I later found out. Aside from Mozart, the collective childhood everyone had found in the Sound of Music was filmed around Salzburg since the von Trapp family, including Maria, was from Salzburg. Personally, these are not the reasons why we were in Salzburg. The reason was it was my mother-in-law’s favourite city (mine is Vienna), and Salzburg is just an hour and thirty-minute train ride from Munich, where we live. So if it is your first-time in Salzburg, here are the best places to stay according to my in-laws.

Best Areas to Stay in Salzburg

  1. Altstadt (Old Town): The historic heart of Salzburg, Altstadt is famous for its charming cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and iconic landmarks such as Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mirabell Palace. This area offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to cozy guesthouses, and is ideal for exploring the city’s cultural treasures on foot.
  2. Neustadt (New Town): Located just across the river from Altstadt, Neustadt offers a more modern atmosphere with bustling shopping streets, restaurants, and cafes. This area is a great choice for those seeking a vibrant nightlife scene and easy access to attractions like Mozart’s Birthplace and the Salzburg Museum.
  3. Nonntal: Situated south of Altstadt, Nonntal is a peaceful residential neighborhood known for its green spaces and historic landmarks, including Nonnberg Abbey and the Capuchin Monastery. This area provides a tranquil retreat away from the tourist crowds while still being within walking distance of the city center.
  4. Elisabeth-Vorstadt: Adjacent to Neustadt, Elisabeth-Vorstadt is a diverse and lively district offering a mix of residential and commercial areas. Visitors will find plenty of hotels, shops, and eateries here, as well as easy access to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and attractions like the Salzburg Congress Center.
  5. Leopoldskron-Moos: Located slightly outside the city center, Leopoldskron-Moos is a picturesque area characterized by its scenic lakeside setting and green surroundings. This tranquil neighborhood is home to the iconic Leopoldskron Palace and is a great choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat with easy access to nature trails and outdoor activities.
