Where to Stay in Ljubljana: The Best Places for First-Time Visitors + Areas to Avoid

What to do in one day in Ljubljana

I actually did not know what to expect with Ljubljana. I had no actual affinity with Slovenia except for a brief encounter with a backpacking couple in the camping grounds in Ellenborough Falls in NSW, Australia way back in 2017. I remember asking the stupid question, is it part of EU? Slovenia did not spark joy to me, until I saw a video of Lake Bled, the water was so clear that it filled me up with longing, so common a reaction if you come from a place of warm crystal clear waters. The moment I stood in the middle of Tromostovje soaking the sounds, scenery, and the smell, I told myself, not bad for such a small city.

Nestled along the banks of the emerald Ljubljanica River, Slovenia’s pint-sized capital captivates visitors with its charming old town, Baroque architecture, and leafy green parks. From its vibrant cultural scene to its thriving culinary offerings, Ljubljana beckons travelers to wander its cobblestone streets and uncover the hidden treasures of this captivating city. In this guide, I walk you through the best places in Ljubljana for first-timers.

Quick Ljubljana accommodation guide

The best luxury hotel: Intercontinental Ljubljana
The best boutique hotel: AS Boutique Hotel

The best apartment for a group or family traveling with kids: AB Ljubljana – The Residence
The best budget hotel: Best Western Premier Hotel Slon
The best hostel: Boutique Hostel Angel

I’d recommend the following five areas for first-time visitors to stay

What to do in one day in Ljubljana
  1. Ljubljana Old Town (Stare Mesto): The heart of the city, Ljubljana Old Town is where you’ll find the iconic Triple Bridge, Preseren Square, and the majestic Ljubljana Castle overlooking the city. Staying in this area puts you within walking distance of many attractions, charming cobblestone streets lined with cafes and restaurants, and vibrant cultural events.
  2. Tivoli Park District: Adjacent to Tivoli Park, the largest green space in Ljubljana, this area offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city center. Accommodations here range from boutique hotels to cozy guesthouses, providing a tranquil setting while still being within easy reach of the city center via a pleasant stroll through the park.
  3. Šiška District: A vibrant neighborhood with a mix of residential areas, trendy cafes, and cultural attractions. Staying in Šiška allows you to experience a more local atmosphere while still being well-connected to the city center via public transportation.
  4. Metelkova District: Known for its alternative art scene and colorful street art, Metelkova is a unique area with a bohemian flair. Accommodations here range from budget hostels to quirky boutique hotels, catering to travelers looking for an unconventional stay.
  5. Trnovo District: Nestled along the banks of the Ljubljanica River, Trnovo is a charming district with a relaxed vibe. Here, you’ll find historic buildings, artisan shops, and leafy squares, making it a picturesque area to stay in while still being within walking distance of the city center.

Places to avoid

While Ljubljana is generally a safe and welcoming city, there are a couple of areas that visitors might want to avoid. These areas may have their own unique charm and appeal to certain travelers, but they might not be the best choice for first-time visitors looking for a central location with easy access to attractions and a vibrant atmosphere. It’s always a good idea to research thoroughly and read reviews before choosing accommodation or exploring less-known areas of a city.

Prule District: While parts of Prule are pleasant and residential, there are areas that may feel run-down or less safe, particularly at night. Some travelers may find the atmosphere in certain parts of Prule to be less inviting compared to other areas of the city.

Stara Cerkev District: Located on the outskirts of Ljubljana, Stara Cerkev is primarily a residential area with limited tourist attractions. While it may offer affordable accommodation options, travelers may find it less convenient in terms of access to the city center and amenities compared to other areas of Ljubljana.
