Where to Stay in Prague for First-time Visitors: The Top 10 + Places to Avoid

Solo female travel in Prague Czech Republic

Prague held a special nook in my heart. It was the first city I traveled solo after a serious talk with my then-boyfriend (now husband) in La Palma (Spain) that I missed traveling solo. When he said that I should do it more then, after all I now live in a new continent and there are many places to explore. I did not waste time and instantly booked a trip to Prague in the middle of winter. Yes, my 2023 started with a solo trip to Prague. Prague in January was cold but nevertheless utterly gorgeous. So in this guide, I walk you through the best places to stay in Prague for first-timers. I also included some hotel suggestions based on actual guest reviews.

In a nutshell: where to stay in Prague for first-time visitors

  1. Old Town (Stare Mesto): Best for first-time visitors, families, and history lovers. Offers iconic attractions like Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and Prague Astronomical Clock.
  2. Lesser Town (Mala Strana): Ideal for couples seeking romance amidst charming cobblestone streets, historic churches, and scenic views of Prague Castle.
  3. Prague Castle (Hradcany): Perfect for history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into Czech history through Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, and Golden Lane.
  4. New Town (Nove Mesto): Great for families and nightlife seekers, with bustling streets, Wenceslas Square, and diverse dining and entertainment options.
  5. Vinohrady: Suitable for couples and families seeking a residential neighborhood vibe with parks, cafes, and quieter streets while still being close to the city center.
  6. Vysehrad: Ideal for couples and history lovers, known for its medieval fortress, gardens, and panoramic views of the city.
  7. Karlin: Best for families and nightlife enthusiasts, offering trendy bars, restaurants, and cultural venues in a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere.
  8. Zizkov: Perfect for budget travelers and nightlife seekers, known for its eclectic mix of bars, clubs, and affordable accommodations.
  9. Josefov (Jewish Quarter): Ideal for history lovers and cultural enthusiasts, featuring Jewish museums, synagogues, and historic sites.
  10. Letna: Great for families and outdoor enthusiasts, offering expansive parks, playgrounds, and stunning views of the city skyline.

Neighborhoods to Avoid

  1. Florenc: While convenient for transportation, Florenc lacks the charm and attractions of other neighborhoods, making it less ideal for first-time visitors looking to explore Prague’s highlights.
  2. Smichov: Although Smichov has its own attractions, such as shopping centers and breweries, it may not offer the same cultural immersion or historical ambiance as other areas, making it less suitable for those seeking an authentic Prague experience.
