Mahé Travel Guide | Things to Do in Mahe, Seychelles

things to do in mahe seychelles

The largest island of Seychelles is Mahé, and since the international airport is located here, it’s the first stop for all visitors. Mahé is the perfect choice for beach lovers who want to explore the natural beauty and enjoy a wide range of activities. The island also allows you to connect with other Seychelles locals and participate in their activities. Our Mahe travel guide looks at all you need to know before traveling to this fantasy-like island.

Getting Around in Mahé Island

Although Mahé is the main island in Seychelles, it’s about sixteen miles long and four miles wide. This means that you can quickly get around with a bus, cab, or walking. There are blue buses on the streets, and transport costs less than a dollar.  You can definitely connect with your resort and they can arrange your transportation around the island.

The island roads are usually congested at rush hour, so you need to check the travel times before going out. The locals are friendly too, so you can ask them for directions when you need to. And, it’s a good idea to have some change with you.

Mahé and Praslin are both small enough that getting around by car is really the best option. You can rent a car on both islands, and on La Digue as well. Public buses exist, but they aren’t really reliable or convenient. On La Digue, bikes are really the best way to get around – there are no cars allowed on the island! – but on Mahé and Praslin, bikes can be a bit dangerous because of the hilly terrain and the lack of bike lanes. Taxis are an option on all three islands, but they can be expensive.

Mahé has a lot of taxis too, whether you’re taking a full-day tour or a quick trip. There’s also the option of a taxi boat to get around.

What to Bring to Mahe, Seychelles?

When visiting Mahé, you should ensure you’re well prepared to enjoy what the beautiful island offers fully. It’s essential to wear light cotton clothing, whether t-shirts, dresses or shorts. Of course, your swimsuit is necessary for your time on the beach.

You should also pack a lot of sunscreens, and take sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. It’s a good idea to cover yourself with insect repellant, because there are a lot of sand flies and mosquitoes, although you don’t have to worry about malaria.

As for shoes, you can go for open-toed shoes and sandals. But it would be best if you also packed walking shoes to walk in the mountains and explore forests. Waterproof sandals are needed for walking across the coastline.

Mahé also has fantastic views for all tourists, so you shouldn’t forget your camera. While you can buy photographic supplies in Mahé, it’s a good idea to bring yours. Other helpful items include extra memory cards, binoculars, and a flashlight.
