JONA’S COURSES AND SERVICES OFFERED HERE ON BWAB
The courses here on Backpacking with a Book will not necessarily guide you on how to become a popular and moneyed blogger. There are many popular travel bloggers who offered such courses already. We offer reasonably priced coaching on language (English, Tagalog, Cebuano), creative writing courses, and proofreading/editing services.
What we aim here is to listen to the struggles of potential writers and offer a thorough coaching on how to improve their pieces. Of course, if you need some advice on love, travel, and life, we are here to help you out. 😉
If you desire to have a one-on-one conversation and tutorial on creative writing, this is the right place for you. I offer a poetry workshop, fiction-writing workshop, and creative nonfiction workshop (personal and travel essays).
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN OUR CONVERSATIONAL WRITING COACHING?
1. A curated list of readings that would aid you in finding your voice and crafting your own body of works.
2. A personal yet learned constructive criticism on your work.
3. I offer an hour-long one-on-one conversation/session via Skype twice a week.
4. Of course, free travel advice + real-time updates of our whereabouts + personal postcards sent to you are some of the freebies you can get.
AM I QUALIFIED TO HANDLE SUCH COURSES?
Honestly, it would be a reluctant yes. No amount of recognition and awards could make a writer completely confident with herself. But if you are looking for credentials, let me awkwardly toot my own horn.
I won first in the Carlos Palanca Literary Award (the so-called most prestigious literary award in the Philippines) for my short story in Cebuano and Sinulog Writing Competition (first prize in both personal essay and poetry category).
I made it to Iligan National Writers Workshop (poetry fellow) and Silliman National Writers Workshop (creative nonfiction fellow). These are two of the most respected writing workshops in the country. The selection process is rigorous and is paneled by some of the most respected writers in the country. These national workshops are the rite of passage for young writers in the Philippines.
I graduated with a degree of BA-English (focused on literature and creative writing), had some masters’ units on literature (too nomadic to finish my masters’), taught literature and creative writing for two and half years at University of the Philippines Cebu.
My first poetry collection, Alang sa Nasaag, was published last August 2016. I am working on a collection of short stories in Cebuano and another collection of travel essays in English.

For non-Filipinos who want to learn the Cebuano and Filipino (Tagalog) languages, I also offer one-on-one classes via Skype. This is best for foreigners who want to communicate better with their loved ones and friends in the Philippines.
I also offer conversational English for non-native English speakers.
AM I QUALIFIED?
I am a proud and true-blue Cebuano. I write and speak in my mother tongue.
I taught English for six years online. Most of my students are Japanese, Vietnamese, and Koreans. I’m trying to tap Eastern Europeans who want to learn conversational English.

PROOFREADING AND EDITING SERVICES
I offer proofreading and technical editing services and employ the Chicago Manual of Styles. For substantial editing, fee is doubled.
AM I QUALIFIED?
I had a rigorous six-month training on the Chicago Manual of Styles at the then-Exlibris (now Authors’ Solution), one of the many employers I had in my early twenties.
